Abstract: Objective. This study evaluates in three-digit numerals how the writing times between digits (Inter Digit Jump -IDJ) adjust to the predictions deduced from the transcoding models proposed by Power and Dal Martello (1990) and Barrouillet, Camos, Perruchet and Seron (2004), who explain the writing of numerals in children. Method. The study had the participation of twenty five (25) first grade children who wrote down spoken verbal numerals in three-digit numerals correctly; the duration of the Inter-Digit Jump wa… Show more

“…These investigations involve the analysis of the concepts of Order, Cardinality and Grouping, going in depth into the implications of one-to-one correspondence, positional value, groups of ten, addition and addition-multiplicative composition and decomposition procedures involved in the understanding of numerical expressions, as well as the conversion of units of inferior order to units of superior order and order relations. An example of the above can be seen in the works of Medina Rodríguez (2016), Hederich-Martínez, Camargo-Uribe, and Ávalo-Azcárate (2016) and Guerrero, Orozco-Hormaza, and Hurtado (2014).…”

“…Understanding the nature of the task of transcoding numerals, or the 'dictating numbers task', is essential for the interpretation of children's errors, as well as for choosing more appropriate evaluation designs, suited to the particularities and characteristics of children during the development stages in which that task is the objective of mathematical education. Other examples are found in Guerrero et al (2014), who analysed the syntactic errors that children make when they write numerals being dictated to them that are larger than those they have already learned. The authors saw a progressive decrease of the syntactic error throughout class years and a modification of the relationships used when writing numeral components.…”
