Show more

“…Contrary to this belief that the perception of time speeds up as age increases, a meta-analytic study found that participants’ subjective experience of the duration of time when carrying out experimental tasks was greater the older they were, i.e., elderly people perceived a slower passage of time. However, the importance of the moderating variables is once again observed, since the results of this study were reversed when participants had to perform a task during the experiment: under these conditions it was older people who underestimated the duration of time elapsed (Gambara, Botella, & Gempp, 2002). Thus, the perception of a speeding up of time that characterizes the elderly may not be observed in experimental tasks where the time interval to be estimated is short and ‘empty’.…”

“…A positive re-evaluation of past experiences also contributes to successful ageing (Westerhof & Bohlmeijer, 2014). Third, given that natural and experimental studies have shown that time passes faster when occupied (Gambara et al, 2002), encouraging participation in activities could influence the perception of the passage of time being more fluid, with consequential positive effects on emotional well-being. Fourth, in view of the favourable role of maintaining a positive attitude towards ageing and experiencing positive emotions by being oriented towards the present, interventions aimed at any of these aspects would be potentially beneficial.…”

“…Psychological time is a fundamental element in the adaptation of the organism to its environment, since a deficit in the estimation of time can produce an imbalance in daily life situations and can degrade the quality of life (Gambara, Botella & Gempp, 2002) (16) . In 1890, James differentiated between objective and subjective time, suggesting that the same space of time seems shorter as we grow older, although, it concludes that whereas this happens with days, months, and years, it is more difficult for the same to happen with hours.…”
