Thyrotoxic adenoma followed by atypical hyperthyroidism due to struma ovarii: clinical and genetic studies

Abstract: Objective: Atypical forms of hyperthyroidism represent a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Struma ovarii is an ovarian teratoma and constitutes a rare cause of ectopic thyroidal hormonal production. We describe a case of struma ovarii that combined two different sources of hyperthyroidism in the same patient and report genetic studies in order to contribute a better understanding of the autonomy and tumorigenesis of the struma ovarii. Case report: A 73-year-old nulliparous woman presented a thyroid toxic ad… Show more

“…Malignant transformation is relatively uncommon, reported in about 15% of patients (44). Thyroid hyperfunction develops in 5-15% of patients (45,47). Struma ovariirelated thyrotoxicosis has been reported even after treatment of a thyroid toxic adenoma (45).…”

“…In literature, most of the data about this condition is collected from individual case reports, case series [1,2,4]. As presented in this case, the majority of cases are incidentally diagnosed [5,[6][7][8][9]. Malignant struma ovarii often occurs in the fi fth decade of life [3].…”
