Thyroid hormone disrupting activities of sediment from the Guanting Reservoir, Beijing, China

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t s• Yeast bioassays were used to evaluate the TR disrupting activities of the sediments.• The organic extracts showed TR antagonistic activities.• The elutriates also significantly antagonized the TR.• The causes of toxicity in the elutriates appear to be partly related to the heavy metals. a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c tIn the present study, yeast bioassays were used to evaluate and characterize the thyroid receptor (TR) disrupting activities of the organic extracts and elutriates of t… Show more

“…Although no TR agonist activity was detected, most of the water samples from the targeted area showed TR antagonistic activity in a concentration-dependent manner, which was similar to the results obtained in other studies [9,12,33,34]. us, TR antagonist activities in the water samples were notable and more common than TR agonist activities [12].…”

“…ere are numerous potential routes of human exposure to TDCs, including contaminated air, water, soil, and diet [7]. TH-disrupting activity has been found in industrial effluents, sediment extracts, water sources, and even in drinking water in China [8][9][10][11][12]. erefore, TDCs have become a potential threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems in China.…”

“…Few reports on the TR-disrupting effects of the soil samples are available, but exclusively TR-antagonistic activity in sediment samples collected from the Guanting Reservoir, Beijing, was previously reported (Li et al, 2014b). The AH equivalent concentration in the sediment organic extracts ranged from 25.4 73.7 to 176.9 718.0 mg/g AH and were comparable to those of the soil samples mentioned above.…”

“…AFM 1 , AFM 2 , AFB 2a , AFG 2a , aflatoxicol (AFL), AFP 1 , AFQ 1 and AFH 1 are derivatives of AFTs. AFB 1 is considered to be the most toxic AFT ( Wong & Hsieh, 1976 ; Bondy & Pestka, 2000 ; Hernandez-Mendoza, Garcia & Steele, 2009 ), with 10-fold and 68-fold higher toxicity compared to that of potassium cyanide and arsenic respectively ( Li, 2002 ), and is primarily responsible for food and feed contamination ( Hernandez-Mendoza, Garcia & Steele, 2009 ). AFB 1 has also been identified by the WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC (1993) as one of the most potent natural group 1A carcinogens ( Heinrich, 2003 ).…”
