Thyroid Function Abnormalities among Hospital Patients of Hilly Nepal

Abstract: Introduction: Thyroid dysfunction stands as the second most common endocrine disease after diabetes mellitus. National reports on its prevalence are meagre. “…Our findings also revealed that in the spectrum of thyroid disorders, subclinical hypothyroidism was reported in highest number of patient. 2,5,6,9,10 Depression, non-specific pain disorder, thyroid swelling, paresthesia and menstrual disturbances together contributed the majority of comorbidities associated with thyroid disorders. This was an important finding to guide the rational prescription of thyroid tests which would help to raise their diagnostic accuracy.…”

“…In a hospital based study performed at central Nepal, out of 5230 subjects ranging from early infant to elderly age, 71% of them have euthyroidism with serum FT3 = 2.3 ± 0.6 pg/mL, FT4 = 11.5 ± 2.0 pg/mL and TSH = 2.3 ± 1.1 mIU/L [20].
