Thyroid Endocrine Disruption in Stonerollers and Cricket Frogs from Perchlorate-Contaminated Streams in East-Central Texas

Abstract: In October 2001 and March 2002, a field survey of central stonerollers (Campostoma anomalum) from perchlorate-contaminated streams in central Texas was conducted to assess thyroid endocrine disruption. A survey of adult male and female cricket frogs (Acris crepitans) was performed at the same site between 2001 and 2003. Perchlorate is an oxidizer primarily used in solid-fuel rockets, and many sites that processed or used perchlorate are now contaminated. Histological analysis revealed that the fish from contam… Show more

“…The concentrations of perchlorate in this study are within the environmentally relevant range (Carr and Patiño, 2011; Smith et al, 2001; Theodorakis et al, 2006a; Theodorakis et al, 2006b) and similar responses of thyroid histomorphology have been described at concentrations lower than those used in the present study for zebrafish (Liu et al, 2006; Schmidt et al, 2012) and mosquitofish (Bradford et al, 2005). Thyroid tissue, sex ratios and gonad maturity were sensitive to chronic exposure that evoked observable changes during early stages of development.…”

“…Perchlorate, a contaminant associated with rocket fuel production, is a well-known example (Goleman et al, 2002a;Goleman et al, 2002b;Ortiz-Santaliestra and Sparling, 2007;Theodorakis et al, 2006). A number of pesticides can inhibit or delay anuran metamorphosis as well (Distel and Boone, 2009;Howe et al, 2004;Mackey and Boone, 2009;Sparling and Fellers, 2009), including atrazine (Carr et al, 2003;Sullivan and Spence, 2003).…”

“…A broad range of chemicals have been reported to bind to the TR and might produce complex effects on thyroid hormone signaling (Zoeller 2005;Cheng 2005;Theodorakis et al 2006). The mean concentration of nitrobenzene in effluents from P2, which exhibited the greatest T3 antagonist equivalency, was 100-fold greater than the national standard.…”
