We describe the clinical, pathological, and imaging findings of mediastinal tumors with focus on thymic hyperplasia, thymic epithelial tumors, and germ cell tumors, malignant lymphoma, and various cystic masses. Chemical shift magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful in characterization of the normal thymus and differentiation of hyperplastic thymus and thymic tumors. In contrast to noninvasive thymomas, invasive thymomas and thymic carcinomas show a more aggressive growth pattern. Local invasion and pleural spread are characteristic of invasive thymoma and mediastinal lymphadenopathy and distant metastasis suggest thymic carcinomas. Mature teratoma typically shows various computed tomography (CT) attenuation, and MR signal intensity depending on its contents and fat tissue and bone within the lesions are its characteristic findings. Seminomas typically have homogenous internal CT attenuation and MR signal intensity with minimal contrast enhancement. Nonseminomatous malignant germ cell tumors characteristically show prominent internal degenerative changes and invasion to the adjacent structures. In mediastinal lymphomas, a residual mass is common after treatment and MRI provides important information in distinguishing viable tumors from residual benign masses. Some mediastinal cysts may reveal high attenuation similar to solid lesions on CT depending on their contents and MRI can be useful in the differentiation of cystic masses from solid lesions.

# CASE HISTORYA 35-yr-old obese male was admitted to the Tri-Service General Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan) for further examination of an abnormal opacity seen on a chest radiograph obtained during a medical check-up. The patient had been asymptomatic and had never received any treatment with steroids. Physical examination was unremarkable. Laboratory data, including complete blood count and tumour markers, were within normal limits. Abnormal laboratory findings from serological test were as follows: cholesterol 225 mg?dL -1 ; aspartate aminotransferase 45 IU?L -1 ; and alanine aminotransferase 61 IU?L -1 . The initial chest radiograph and computed tomography (CT) scan are seen in figures 1 and 2, respectively.The patient underwent mass resection via sternotomy. An oversized tumoural thymus (the first specimen) was resected in toto. However, the resected tumour was not comparable in size to the lesion discovered on CT imaging. A decision was made to incise the mediastinal pleura for confirmation of the pre-operative CT findings. A sizeable, whitish soft mass (the second specimen) was uncovered in the mediastinum, adjacent to the aortic arch. No attachment was found between the tumour and either the bronchial tree or oesophagus. Surgical excision of the tumour was performed. Abstract. This study presents a case of a canine thymolipoma, which is a rare, slow-growing, benign tumor of the thymus composed of mature adipose tissue and thymic tissue. A 9-year-old spayed, female miniature pinscher presented with chronic cough and dyspnoea. Radiology revealed pleural effusion and a mediastinal mass with a fatty appearance. The mass was attached to, and silhouetted, the adjacent pericardium. Microscopically, the mass was composed of adipose tissue with numerous cords and nests of thymic tissue without corticomedullary arrangement. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first description of this uncommon neoplasm in a dog. The gross and histological findings are similar to those described for thymolipomas in humans. The possible histogenesis for this neoplasia in a dog is also discussed.
