Thymbra capitata Essential Oil Prevents Cell Death Induced by 4-Hydroxy-2-Nonenal in Neonatal Rat Cardiac Myocytes

Abstract: An interdisciplinary experimental investigation on the antioxidant activity of Thymbra capitata essential oil was made. This plant is a Mediterranean culinary herb, whose essential oil antioxidant power has recently been demonstrated in vitro as one of the highest in nature. We tested if this in vitro antioxidant capacity was reproducible on biological systems using as model system primary cultures of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes treated with the lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal. The composition a… Show more

“…It was first important to characterize hydrosol composition by SPME GC-MS in comparison with that of the original essential oil. The main constituents of the T. capitata EO were oxygenated phenolic monoterpene carvacrol, monocyclic monoterpene ␥-terpinene, and the alkylbenzene p-cymene, as found in previous studies (54)(55)(56). However, the carvacrol content in this study was much lower (20%) than previous reported concentrations (60% to 70%).…”

“…Several papers have been published on the chemical composition of the essential oil of T. capitatus (Cosentino et al, 1999;Arras and Usai, 2001;Miceli et al, 2006;El Ajjouri et al, 2008;Figueiredo et al, 2008;Blanco et al, 2010;Napoli et al, 2010;Tawaha and Hudaib, 2012;Yvon et al, 2012;BallesterCosta et al, 2013;Chedia et al, 2013;Saoud et al, 2013;Hortigo´n-Vinagre et al, 2014;Bouayad Alam et al, 2014). It is very rich in the terpenes thymol, carvacrol, and p-cymene.…”

“…Thymbra capitata is a Mediterranean culinary herb. Its essential oil prevents 4-HNE-induced cell death and avoids mitochondrial membrane potential loss and ROS generation in primary cultures of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes [15]. Olive (Olea europaea) leaf, a popular traditional herbal medicine, has a cardioprotective function.…”

“…Some of them have been suggested to be attractive sources of potential agents to mitigate oxidative stress and attenuate 4-HNE-induced toxicity. However, researchers pay little attention to reviewing these medicinal plants and natural bioactive compounds on combating 4-HNE-induced deleterious effects in neurotoxicity and neurological disorder, eye damage, cardiovascular injury, liver injury, and energy metabolism disorder [12][13][14][15][16].…”
