Abstract: The need for a better understanding of radical uncertainty might have never been greater. Ill-preparedness for natural hazards, a resurgence of serious public health concerns or illusions of control over unruly technology question the extent to which we can ‘really’ shape the world around us. Human-made crises, too, test how we routinely do things. We ask how organisations and actors within them prepare for a collapse of meaning and practise radical uncertainty. Given the breadth and depth of the region’s ener… Show more

“…The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major global challenges for organizations and has impacted their need to learn to adapt rapidly (Carnevale & Hatak, 2020 ; Cooke et al, 2021 ; Horn et al, 2021 ; Li et al, 2020 ). As the event impact made abundantly clear, there is a set of external threats that occur irregularly and unpredictably; these include natural disasters, foreign invasions, civil war, and rapid economic, institutional, and technological changes.…”

“…As the impact of the current COVID-19 disruption demonstrates, the toolbox for organizational adaptive responses needs to be updated and further developed (Butt, 2021 ; Haak-Saheem, 2020 ; Henry et al, 2021 ; Liu et al, 2020 ). The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has spread long-lasting anxiety among communities and has fostered a general sense of insecurity at the sociopolitical, economic, and cultural levels, dramatically disrupting everyday life and business activities (Debata et al, 2020 ; Horn et al, 2021 ; Probst et al, 2020 ). Under these circumstances, an unprecedented magnitude of uncertainty has been experienced collectively regarding the threats and challenges of the COVID-19 outbreak.…”

“…can be referred to as sensitive periods (Kish-Gephart and Campbell, 2015;Mathias et al, 2015). For organizations, sensitive periods are likewise not only considered to be the early years of a firm's existence, but clearly other sensitive periods can occur during the lifetime of an organization, these include discontinuities in product and factor markets (Horn et al, 2021;Nykänen, 2021), new market entry (Benner and Tripsas, 2012), periods of underperformance or crisis (Beltratti and Stulz, 2012;Schaub and Schmid, 2013), etc.…”

“…Especially the latter aspects have gained greater relevance during the work on this special issue, as this period witnessed the onset of the COVID‐19 pandemic (Slotegraaf et al, 2021). Such large‐scale shocks and crises not only affect how organizations are running their innovation activities and how they adapt their strategies accordingly (Argyres et al, 2019; Bundy et al, 2016; Horn et al, 2021) but they also affect the individuals working in these organizations. Such shocks and crises threaten people's health, safety, and professional prospects to an unprecedented extent.…”
