Through the endoscope balloon dilation of ileocolonic strictures: prognostic factors, complications, and effectiveness

Abstract: Through the endoscope balloon stricture dilatation is a relatively safe and often effective treatment modality in ileocolonic strictures. The presence of ulcers in the stricture have a worse outcome as do smokers.

“…17 Small-bowel strictures that are long (O5 cm), severely inflamed, and ulcerated should therefore be considered high risk and a potential contraindication to DBE-assisted balloon dilation. 28,29 However, our series also shows that a history of surgery is not a contraindication to DBE: 10 of our patients had undergone previous surgery (often multiple), but the procedure was straightforward in most of them (via both the oral and rectal routes).…”

“…[22,23] In these patients, 2 or 3 small radial electroincisions are performed under endoscopic view and balloon dilation is performed for 15 to 20 minutes. [24] The pressure created by the balloon dilation radiates outwardly. As a result, the force of dilatation is exerted solely on the stricture site and the risk of tearing seen with rigid bougies is reduced to a minimum.…”
