Thrombosis and hemostasis health in pregnancy: Registries from the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis

Abstract: Online patient registries are used to collect data on clinical conditions with rare occurrence or unclear diagnostic and management practices. The success of these registries depends on clear definition of goals, correct identification of patient population/inclusion criteria, availability of appropriate setup and maintenance tools, and the quality of dissemination. The Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) for Women's Health Issues in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, one of 20 committees of the Internation… Show more

“…Coagulation factors are blood proteins that are involved in hemostasis. During pregnancy, the concentrations of F5, F7, F8, F9, F10, F12 and von Willebrand factor increase significantly together with an increase in the concentration of plasma fibrinogen [ 78 ]. This helps blood clot more easily during pregnancy to reduce blood loss during labor and delivery [ 79 ].…”

“…Overall, the evidence for advanced treatment options in high-risk PE during pregnancy is poor. A prospective international registry investigating the effectiveness and safety of advanced methods in massive pregnancy-related PE is currently underway (MAPP registry endorsed by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis) ( 53 ). Due to the diagnostic and treatment complexity, a multidisciplinary team (with experience in PE management in pregnancy) should be consulted to evaluate the best and treatment approach ( 7 ).…”

“…Thus, manifestations can be either thrombotic or haemorrhagic. Venous and arterial thrombosis have been reported in both COVID-19 patients [ 100 102 ], and pregnant women [ 103 ]. Coagulopathy complications, thrombosis apart, have been reported similarly in pregnant women and in the general population [ 104 ]; however, pregnant women deserve closer surveillance since they are more likely to suffer from thrombotic-haemorrhagic catastrophic events [ 97 , 98 ].…”
