Blood or plasma to which the usual anticoagulants are added and stored at room temperature shows reduced coagulability in a few days due to loss of alpha-prothromboplastin (antihaemophilic factor) and prothrombin accelerator (Factor V, labile factor, plasma Ac-globulin, proaccelerin). A prolongation of the thrombin clotting time is also noted. The mechanisms which are responsible for these changes in stored plasma are not well understood. Since they are of theoretical interest and of practical significance an investigation of the impaired coagulability of stored plasma was carried out and the presevation of the coagulation factors was attempted.
