1. The authors analysed the potential effects of interspecific competition on spatial distribution of two gall-inducing insects, Bystracoccus mataybae (Hemiptera: Eriococcidae) and Lopesia mataybae (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), that co-occurring simultaneously in Matayba guianensis. Overall, the authors hypothesised that spatial gall distribution between and within leaflets is shaped by interspecific competition.2. The authors determine: i) the B. mataybae distribution between two different habitats; ii) the B. mataybae and L. mataybae distribution in the same habitat; and iii) the B. mataybae distribution when L. mataybae is present and absent in the habitat. For all experimental designs, the authors measured gall abundance along leaflet sizes, as well used a new Cartesian plane technique to map spatial gall distribution within the leaflet to obtain gall density.3. In Campo-cerrado, B. mataybae induced galls on small leaflets and in Cerrado on large leaflets, with similar spatial distribution within leaflets. Within the same habitat, B. mataybae induced galls on small leaflets, with higher gall density in the right basal of the blade, and L. mataybae on large leaflets, occupying the right apical area. In habitat with interspecific competition pressure (L. mataybae present), B. mataybae selected small leaflets with higher gall density on the right basal area, and in habitat without interspecific competition (L. mataybae absent), B. mataybae selected larger leaflets with broader distribution over within the blade.4. The study's findings confirm that both gall-inducing insect species diverge in their distribution, avoiding overlapping niches confirming that the spatial gall distribution of both gall-inducing species are driven by interspecific competition.

Diversity of insect galls from Mato Grosso State, Brazil: Cerrado

The Midwest region of Brazil possesses large areas dominated by the Cerrado that is poorly known concerning insect gall and their interactions. In this study, we inventory the gall morphology, host plants, and the gall makers from Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso State, in areas of natural vegetation from Cerrado, for the first time. Samplings occurred in two expeditions, July 2012 and January 2013. We characterized 295 morphotypes of insect galls in 140 host plant species, with 89 gall makers; the richest family in host plants was Fabaceae (16.7%), and the species was Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand (Burseraceae, 3.7%). Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães is the richest Brazilian cerrado area in gall morphotypes (295) and the second in average morphotypes/host plant species (2.1). Additionally, six genera and 38 species are new records as host plants; two of them, Bernardia similis Pax and K.Hoffm and Ormosia macrophylla Benth., are new occurrences for Mato Grosso State, and other two, Vochysia petraea Warm. and Talisia subalbens (Mart.) Radlk. are listed in the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN. This inventory data represents a testimony of insect-plant interactions in a Brazilian Cerrado area that was consumed by an unprecedented fire in the dry season of 2020.

The geographical occurrence of gall inducers may not be uniform due to several factors, including variation in natural plant composition and geographical position, especially in the North-South axis, with latitude-related variations (Skuhravá and Skuhravý, 2009).The genus Andira Lam. belongs to Fabaceae, one of the richest families of the world with 3,033 species and in Brazil, with 1,578 species (Pennington, 2003). Andira has 29 species in the tropical regions of America, 20 of them confirmed in all Brazilian regions. Andira species occur in Amazonia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Atlantic Forest phytogeographic domains. They are very diverse and occupy various habitats such as Caatinga, Campinarana, Cerrado, Riparian Forest, Amazon flood forests, Dry Seasonal Forests, Ombrophile Forest, Restinga, as well as anthropized areas.
