Three New Sesquiterpenoids from Echinops ritro L.

Abstract: From the whole plants of E. ritro L., the three new sesquiterpenoids (3a,4a,6a)-3,13-dihydroxyguaia-7(11),10(14)-dieno-12,6-lactone (1), (3a,4a,6a,11b)-3-hydroxyguai-1(10)-eno-12,6-lactone (2), and (11a)-11,13-dihydroarglanilic acid methyl ester (¼ (4b,6a,11a)-4,6-dihydroxy-1-oxoeudesm-2-en-12-oic acid methyl ester; 3), together with eight known sesquiterpenoids, were isolated. Their structures were elucidated through analysis of spectroscopic data including extensive 2D-NMR.

“…Compounds, with the exception of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol, were isolated for the first time from O. acanthium. 4β,14-Dihydro-3-dehydro-zaluzanin C (1) and zaluzanin C (2) were isolated earlier only from one Onopordum species (O. laconicum) [8], while 4β,15,11β,13-tetrahydrozaluzanin C (3) was reported previously only from Ainsliaea fragrans [9] and Echinops ritro [10]. Interestingly, from the leaves of O. acanthium, germacranolide sesquiterpenes (onopordopicrin and arctiopicrin) were reported in the literature [11,12], while in our experiment guaianolide derivatives (1-3) were isolated from the roots.…”

“…Thus they have been investigated for their antimicrobial properties. 2 Previous chemical investigations of this genus established the presence of thiophenes, 3,4 acetylenic thiophenes, 5 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, 6 triterpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, 4 sesquiterpene lactones, 7 lignans, 8 and hydroxycinnamates. 9 Previous phytochemical studies on the roots of E. gracilis revealed the presence of erythrinasinate, vogelate, ferulic acid, pcoumaric acid, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, and quercetin.…”

“…respectively. The furanoeudesmane chlomultin B 280 is another new sesquiterpene, which has been obtained from Chloranthus multistachys,135 whilst the methyl esters 281, 282 and 283 have been identified as components of Dimerostemma arnottii254 and Echinops ritro,255 respectively. The species Chrysanthemum indicum,256 Curcuma wenyujin16 and Sarcanda glabra257 contain the new eudesmane sesquiterpenes chrysanthemdiol A 284, curcodione 285 and glabranol B 286, respectively.…”
