Three gemini cationic surfactants as biodegradable corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in HCl solution

Abstract: Three gemini cationic surfactants with different hydrophobic spacer chain lengths were synthesized and characterized. The inhibition effect of N,on the corrosion of carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl solution at 25-60°C was studied by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the synthesized inhibitors are effective inhibitors even at very low concentration, and the adsorption on the carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Potentiod… Show more

“…Generally, the magnitude of ΔG ads is around -20 kJ/mol or lower are consistent with the electrostatic interaction between charged inhibitor molecules and the charged metal surface (physisorption); those around -40 kJ/mol or higher involve charge sharing or transfer from the inhibitor molecules to the metal surface to form a coordinate type of bond (chemisorption) [51][52][53][54][55]. The ΔG ads values are ranged between -18.12 and -26.49 kJ/mol.…”

“…On increasing the inhibitor concentration above the CMC, IE values for 3N-12 are quite constant indicating that a stable layer of inhibitors is formed onto the stainless steel surface. Adding additional inhibitor molecules leads to micelles formation which does not change the current corrosion density [45]. This relationship was not observed for 3N-18.…”

“…The gemini alkylammonium salts possess a very low critical micelle concentrations (cmc), which is up to hundred times lower than cmc's of corresponding monomeric surfactants. Gemini surfactants also have a larger molecular area in comparison to monomeric analogs which cause them to act more efficiently as corrosion inhibitors [80,[101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110]. Dimeric surfactant 1,4-tetramethylene-bis(N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromide) (12-4-12) is more efficient in decreasing corrosion rate of carbon steel in 1 M HCl than its monomeric analogue N-dodecyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB).…”
