Three‐dimensional resistivity probability tomography at the prehistoric site of grotta reali (Molise, Italy)

Abstract: A geoelectrical survey has been performed at the Mousterian (Palaeolithic) site of Grotta Reali (Molise Region, central Italy), which is one of the most important archaeological locations in the region, where Neanderthal fossils have been brought to light. An array of dipole^dipole profiles was designed in order to explore the nature of some archaeological levels found in a mostly fine-grained wastematrixalong the wallofa travertine open quarry, very close to the Grotta Reali, whichisa natural cavity of karst … Show more

“…Many datasets have been successfully interpreted on this semi-quantitative basis, e.g. in archaeological prospection [19,20]. In all of the cases in which the correct estimate of the true physical parameter is considered essential for assessing the inner properties of the target, the PT results can be used as robust and confident geometric constraints in any of the standard inversion routines.…”

“…Recently, the application of electrical resistivity studies in periglacial research has been further developed. Inspired by field examples in neighbouring disciplines such as environmental (Loke and Barker 1996; Yi et al 2001; Chambers et al 2002; Bentley and Gharibi 2004; Bichler et al 2004), hydrological (Park 1998) and archaeological sciences (Papadopoulos et al 2007; Compare et al 2009), series of parallel and orthogonal 2D ERT profiles are merged and inverted subsequently with a 3D inversion algorithm.…”

“…The analysis aims at the 3D mapping and characterization of permafrost occurrence by means of ERT. As two different electrode arrays (Wenner and Wenner-Schlumberger) are measured during data acquisition and a modified combination of survey lines is (Park 1998) and archaeological sciences (Papadopoulos et al 2007;Compare et al 2009), series of parallel and orthogonal 2D ERT profiles are merged and inverted subsequently with a 3D inversion algorithm.…”
