Three Cases of Prurigo Pigmentosa

Abstract: Three cases of prurigo pigmentosa are presented. These patients had episodes of recurring pruritic red papules and gross reticular pigmentation, and responded remarkably to 4,4'‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) or sulfisomezole. The possibility was suggested that this dermatosis is due to allergic reactions to substances similar in chemical structure to sulfonamides.

“…Nagashima (2) suggested that an environmental contaminant in Japan may be a factor, and that the friction from clothing may act as a non‐specific mechanical stimulus considering the predilection for covered areas and the preponderance in summer. Yamasaki et al (5) also suggested a contact allergic reaction to clothing or other related materials. Since the eruptions primarily involve a covered area of the body, the contact allergy may be triggered by the friction of clothing and break out commonly during adolescence, with a seasonal preference for spring‐summer, when increased sweating occurs.…”

“…Nagashima [9| suggested that an environmental factor may play a role, more specif ically physical trauma or friction from the clothing. Paraamino compounds used in manufacturing of clothing have also been suspected [10]. Patch tests including Tinopal® [11], a whitener once thought the cause of pigmented contact dermatitis, have been conducted in several series, with no conclusive results [8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…However, this entity is not considered to be an infection, and anti bacterial agents are ineffective [6], We have already shown that dapsone has an inhib itory effect on the generation of oxygen in termediates (Ols) from polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) [7,8] and exerts its anti inflammatory effect by protecting from au to-oxidative tissue injury in some inflamma tory dermatoses [9],…”
