“…The levels of radioactivity found in autopsy samples from the former thorium workers are much higher than reported for men exposed only to natural environmental levels of thorium (Lucas et al 1970;Clifton et al 1971;Ibrahim et al 1983;Sunta et al 1987). For 232Th, most of the concentrations shown in Table 2 are orders of magnitude greater than reported by Wrenn et al (1981) and Ibraham et al (1983) for two normal U.S. populations: median concentrations of about 0.02, 0.2, 0.005, 0.002, 0.002, and 0.003 mBq per gram of wet tissue for lung, lymph nodes, bone, liver, kidney, and spleen, respectively.…”

“…But inspection of the paper by Stover et al (1962) shows that it dealt with 228Th, that no analyses of muscle were done, and that there was very little, if any, basis for estimating the fraction of any isotope of thorium in muscle. Sunta et al (1987) found that the total thorium content of muscle was almost 3 times the total amount in bone. This of course, would lead to much higher estimates of the fraction of body thorium in muscle and lower fractions in the other organs for the Grand Junction population and for most of the thorium workers in Table 3; the relative distribution among organs other than muscle would not be greatly affected.…”

“…The range of 0.37-10.5 mBq d-' per person was relatively large. Two samples collected in Kiev (8.06 and 10.5 mBq d-' per person) were equal to levels in an Indian region known to have high levels due to naturally occurring geologic formations (Sunta et al 1987). Concentrations of 232Th and 238U in the total diet in Ukrainian were reported to be 11 mBq kg-' dry and 35 ?…”

“…Severe environmental concerns force the establishment for progressively more stringent governmental norms, demanding lower levels of contaminant (Marmolejo-Rodríguez et al 2008;Sunta et al 1987). Thorium(IV) is extensively used for various applications in optics, radio, aeronautics and aerospace, metallurgy and chemical industry, nuclear industry and material field (Zhang et al 2005).…”
