Concentrations of 232Th and activity ratios of 228Th to 232Th and 230Th to 232Th were determined in autopsy samples from five former employees of a thorium refinery. The ranges of 232Th activity concentrations (mBq per gram of wet tissue) were 0.17-94 in lungs, 3.9-1210 in pulmonary lymph nodes, 0.14-1.19 in bones, 0.015-0.68 in liver, 0.97-5.8 in spleen, and 0.009-0.068 in kidneys. These concentrations are 10 to 1,000 times greater than have been reported for persons not occupationally exposed to thorium. In most of the samples, the ratios of 228Th to 232Th and 230Th to 232Th activity at death of the subject were 0.2-0.4 and 0.1-0.2, respectively. 228Th to 228Ra activity ratios (+/- standard errors) of 0.86 +/- 0.11 in lungs and 1.18 +/- 0.13 in lymph nodes of one subject were obtained by calculation from ratios of 228Th to 232Th.

Total diet samples were collected to estimate dietary intakes of several radionuclides for Ukrainian males by duplicate portion studies. The samples were collected in the Kiev, Rovno and Volynsky regions in autumn of 1994. Some foodstuffs, including milk and potato, were also collected in the same regions. Daily intakes of 232Th and 238U were estimated to be 2.0 mBq and 7.5 mBq per person, respectively. The estimated daily intake of 40K, 85 Bq per person, was equivalent to that of Reference Man (the intake of a West European and a North American). Daily intakes of 137Cs were found to be quite different between some regions. Daily intakes were 1.8 Bq per person in the Kiev region and 12 Bq per person in the Rovno and Volynsky regions. Daily intake of 134Cs was below 1 Bq per person.

Thorium reclamation was studied using nanoiron oxide-impregnated cellulose acetate beads to gain insights into the adsorption mechanism, kinetics and thermodynamics. The designed experiments were thoroughly investigated as a function of solution pH, initial thorium(IV) ion concentration, adsorbent dose and nano-iron oxide loading in the cellulose acetate matrix. The batch adsorption of Th(IV) ions revealed the highly pH dependent (pH range 3.0-9.0) behaviour with maximum sorption at pH 6.0 and equilibrium being achieved within 2 h for maximum concentration of 100 mg/L at 298 K. Rapid adsorption of 50 ± 0.2 % was observed within first 10 min. The kinetics data are best described by the pseudofirst-order kinetic model (R 2 = 0.9996) and intraparticle diffusion model. The equilibrium adsorption process was fitted with the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin models which yield good fit with Langmuir isotherm equation indicating monolayer adsorption process. The calculated thermodynamics parameter reveals spontaneous and exothermic adsorption process. Further, the desorption was Th(IV) ions that was easily achieved using 0.05 N HNO 3 which suggests the reusability of the adsorbent for multiple use.
