Thoracoscopic pericardiectomy associated with fully implantable catheter via thoracoscopy in the management of mesothelioma in a bitch

Abstract: Mesothelioma is a very aggressive malignant tumor with low survival rates that is often diagnosed belatedly. Pericardial effusion is a common consequence in cases of mesothelioma, with pericardiocentesis and pericardiectomy indicated; therefor thoracocentesis is necessary to drain the contents no longer retained in the pericardium. The present report describes a mesothelioma–carrying dog with a history of cardiac tamponade that underwent thoracoscopic pericardiectomy and, later, thoracoscopic implantation of a… Show more

“…Moberg found similar results in a cohort of 34 dogs, with a MST from diagnosis to death of 234 days for 25 dogs treated with chemotherapy and 29 days for others 16 . Twenty‐four other cases of dogs receiving chemotherapy for the treatment of mesothelioma were identified in literature 1,17,18,30,32,33,36,39–41,46,47,49,53,56,61,69,70,73 . It was administered intracavitary in 14 (58.3%), intravenously in 7 (29.1%) and both in 3 (12.5%).…”

“…13 Indwelling pleural catheters can also drain the pleural fluid or ascites with a low risk of contamination associated with repeated punctures of the pleura. 14 In this study, catheters were implanted with thoracoscopy or laparoscopy, and used as both injection and drainage routes. To prevent drug dilution and measure the pleural effusion volume, pleural effusion was drained before drug administration of each dose.…”
