Thoracoscopic management of oesophageal mucocele: Old complication, new approach

Abstract: Oesophageal mucocele is an uncommon complication of bipolar exclusion of oesophagus. Traditionally, this condition is managed through thoracotomy which is associated with significant morbidity. The present report outlines the thoracoscopic management of oesophageal mucocele following surgical exclusion for oesophageal perforation. Left thoracoscopic oesophagectomy for oesophageal mucocele described in this report has not been published earlier.

“…In such situations, a partial excision has also been suggested with good results [5]. A left thoracoscopy has been reported as an alternative in cases where dense adhesions are presumed to preclude a right-sided approach [2]. In children, percutaneous drainage has been sometimes instituted as a temporizing measure until a definitive procedure can be done [7].…”
