Background: Despite the association of masticatory function with head posture and mandible movement, the impact of head posture on masseter muscle electrical activity remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the electrical activity of the anterior temporal, masseter, superior trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid muscles in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients in three different head positions and compare the findings with those for healthy subjects.Methods: The study included 16 TMD patients and 17 healthy subjects. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to assess the bilateral anterior temporalis, masseter, superior trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid muscle activities. The maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and root mean square (RMS) sequence of each muscle were measured in three head positions. Mixed analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effects of head posture on muscle electrical activity in each group. Results:The group differences for the bilateral masseter muscles were significant in the relaxation position, neutral head position (NHP), and relaxation position with tooth contact (P<0.05). In both groups, the basal RMSs of the bilateral anterior temporalis muscle in the relaxation position with tooth contact was significantly higher than that in the NHP (P<0.05). In both groups, the basal RMSs of the bilateral masseter muscles in the relaxation position with tooth contact was higher than that in the relaxation position and NHP, with significant differences (P<0.05).Conclusions: During the management of TMD patients, physical therapists should focus on patient education regarding maintenance of a relaxed position and establish appropriate rehabilitation programs to reduce muscle activity.

RESUMEN:El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar los factores asociados a Trastornos Temporomandibulares (TTM) en pacientes del servicio de Estomatología Quirúrgica de un Hospital Peruano. La muestra del estudio estuvo conformado por 132 pacientes diagnosticados con Trastornos Temporomandibulares por cirujanos dentistas especialistas en Cirugía Bucal y Maxilofacial del servicio de Estomatología Quirúrgica. Se realizó una anamnesis complementaria y una evaluación clínica. Del total de pacientes evaluados, se encontró que el 84,09 % pertenecía al sexo femenino y el 20,45 % tenía entre 50-59 años. Además, el 72,73 % refirieron haber recibido atención previa por otro servicio, el 52,27 % presentaron hábito parafuncional de bruxismo, el 58,33 % presentaron patrón oclusal alterado, el 25,76 % presentaron pérdida de 5 dientes o más por arcada con prevalencia en ambas arcadas y el 54,55 % presentaron atrición. Se concluyó que el sexo predominante fue el femenino y el grupo etario prevalente en pacientes con diagnóstico de TTM, se ubicó en el rango de edad de 50-59 años. Respecto a la sintomatología dolorosa en pacientes con diagnóstico de TTM del servicio de Estomatología Quirúrgica del HNAL fue prevalente el dolor al masticar o hablar.PALABRAS CLAVE: trastornos de la articulación temporomandibular, disfunción de la ATM, dolor facial, articulación temporomandibular.

The aim of this study was to know issue of the relationship between mandibular asymmetry and body posture. The literatures of mandibular asymmetry and body posture published in the last 10 years (2012-2022) which were collected from the electronic databases PubMed and Google Scholar. The data obtained was anaylized using observational, prospective, retrospective, case reports, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, showed that there is a relationship between themandibular and C2-3 with the rela-tion of the suprahyoid, hyoid bone, infrahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles connecting to spine. So, the changes in mandi-bular position will also change the body posture, and body posture will also affect the position of the mandibular with spinal de-formities which results in distortion of the vertebral column and asymmetrical face, shoulders, and waist. It was concluded that all studies cited in this literature review reported thatmandibular asymmetry and body posture have a reciprocal relationship.
