Thismia panamensis: first record of Thismiaceae for the Brazilian Cerrado in Goiás state

Abstract: Abstract:We describe the first occurrence of the family Thismiaceae in the Brazilian Cerrado and a new record of Thismia panamensis (Standl.) Jonker for Brazil. We found the species in an urban fragment of semideciduous forest, municipality of Jataí, southeastern Goiás state, Central Plateau Brazil. The record of this achlorophyllous mycoheterotrophic monocot is important, improving the knowledge of the flora of Cerrado domains and giving a better understand of the biogeography of Brazilian mycoheterotrophic a… Show more

“…In Brazil, there are approximately 13 species of Thismia , seven of which are endemic (Flora do Brasil, 2020), distributed in the Amazon, with six species recorded (Voloschen et al 2013; Silva et al 2020), and in the Atlantic Forest, with nine species recorded (Maas et al 1986; Mancinelli et al 2012; Souza & Lorenzi 2012). Recently, a first record of the Thismiaceae for the Cerrado was recorded: Thismia panamensis (Guilherme et al 2016), the focal species of this study.…”

“…Thismia panamensis flowering and fruiting occur in the rainy season. The species has an inferior ovary that, when developed, forms a dehiscent fruit, with exposed seeds (Guilherme et al 2016), similar to other species of Thismia (Brodie 1951; Mar & Saunders 2015). These characteristics of fruit and seed indicate that dispersal may occur by raindrop splash (Mar & Saunders 2015), although, to date, there are no records in the literature on this dispersal strategy for the genus.…”

“…In the Southeastern region, we have representatives from Burmanniaceae (Souza, Blum, & Brotto, 2019), Thismiaceae (Guilherme, Coelho, Smidt, Gomes, & Souza, 2016), Orchidaceae (Bittencourt & Gasper, 2016;Mancinelli & Quadros, 2016). In the South region we have studies with the family Triuridaceae (Valadares, Arçari, Martins, & Schneider, 2015).…”
