Este artículo analiza la distribución de libros en guaraní a lo largo del Río de la Plata y el Paraguay. Las misiones ubicadas en los ríos Paraná y Uruguay eran el territorio central de producción y uso de estos materiales. Sin embargo, el objetivo de este artículo es explorar la menos conocida circulación externa de los libros y evaluar su radio de alcance. ¿Qué tan extendida estuvo esta circulación? ¿Qué libros se distribuyeron y cuáles no? ¿Cuáles fueron las razones? ¿Cuál fue el rol jugado por los misioneros y especialmente los jesuitas? Las fuentes principales para este análisis son los inventarios de las bibliotecas jesuíticas, la mayoría de ellos escritos en el contexto de la expulsión de los jesuitas de la monarquía hispánica (1767-1768). Aunque cuantitativamente escasa, esta circulación tuvo un alto grado de capilaridad. Los libros llegaron a todas las ciudades y misiones relevantes de la región e incluso a Europa. Tanto las redes misionales como las prácticas educativas cumplieron un rol relevante para explicar esta distribución capilar. Especialmente, los jesuitas de toda la provincia del Paraguay estaban obligados a aprender idiomas indígenas. En este sentido, la distribución de libros sugiere que la lengua guaraní era la lengua general colonial del territorio.

This essay analyzes the gender disparities in Guaraní education and literacy in the province of Paraguay during the colonial era through the mid-nineteenth century, based on original Guaraní texts and other archival sources, including school censuses and Guaraní schoolwork. The use of the Native language, in written and spoken forms, proved to be a contentious issue in Paraguay, reflecting the cultural resiliency of the Guaraní, the forces of cultural domination, and the relationship between education, literacy, and gender. Fashion is an element in this analysis as well, because the types of clothing worn reflected the Guaraníes’ changing sense of identity. While the Jesuits encouraged the study and use of the Guaraní language in the mission schools, Bourbon language reforms altered education in the missions in the mid-eighteenth century by the requirements of the colonial state to teach the Guaraní Spanish. Nonetheless, there was a degree of tolerance to the use of the Native language so that the Guaraní could understand their lessons. However, there was no formal education in Paraguay for women and girls until after 1856.

This article examines how the 1705 Guaraní translation and publication of Juan Eusebio Nieremberg’s On the Difference between the Temporal and Eternal in Río de la Plata’s colonial missions provides evidence of Jesuit instruction in advanced spiritual formation as well as more limited forms of devotional training among Guaraní Indians. The book was translated for a growing population of elite Indigenous readers and for public readings among Indians without preparation in literacy in the missions. Introducing mission residents to the practice of spiritual exercises similar to those originally designed by Ignatius Loyola in his sixteenth-century handbook, the Guaraní Nieremberg imprint and its accompanying engravings reveal Jesuit methods of training in spiritual formation as well as efforts to provide for the development of Guaraní-Christian subject formation. The article also examines how the Guaraní brought their own knowledge of the soul-word and its close connections to language, dream songs, and speech to the Jesuit project of spiritual discernment and Guaraní-Christian subject formation.
