Abstract:The second and third-order elastic constants and pressure derivatives of second-order elastic constants of trigonal LiNbO 3 (lithium niobate) have been obtained using the deformation theory. The strain energy density estimated using finite strain elasticity is compared with the strain dependent lattice energy density obtained from the elastic continuum model approximation. The second-order elastic constants and the non-vanishing third-order elastic constants along with the pressure derivatives of trigonal LiNbO 3 are obtained in the present work. The second and third-order elastic constants are compared with available experimental values. The second-order elastic constant 11 C which corresponds to the elastic stiffness along the basal plane of the crystal is less than 33 C which corresponds to the elastic stiffness tensor component along the c-axis of the crystal. The pressure derivatives, dp C d ij / ′ obtained in the present work, indicate that trigonal LiNbO 3 is compressible. The higher order elastic constants are used to find the generalized Gruneisen parameters of the elastic waves propagating in different directions in LiNbO 3 . The Brugger gammas are evaluated and the low temperature limit of the Gruneisen gamma is obtained. The results are compared with available reported values.

SUMMARYA droplet manipulator working with low driving power was developed by using the surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology. The manipulator was driven at a relatively high frequency of 350 MHz to increase the SAW power density. First, a single-phase unidirectional transducer (SPUDT) was designed. Because of its low insertion loss of 1.5 dB and high directivity of 10 dB, the SPUDT successfully conveyed a 100-nl water droplet with RF input power of 18 dBm (60 mW). Second, the SPUDT design was extended to a curved transducer to focus and launch the SAW energy into the narrow waveguide. Owing to the increased SAW power density, the required SAW power was reduced to 15 dBm (30 mW) for the 100-nl droplet manipulation. In addition, fabrication of liquid injectors was discussed for the formation of tiny droplets.

Theoretical analysis of nonlinear effects in surface acoustic waves on waveguide

A structure with a ribbon‐shaped metal thin film on a highly coupled anisotropic piezoelectric substrate acts to concentrate the acoustic wave energy into the region with the thin film. A device making use of the nonlinear interaction of the surface acoustic waves propagating in opposite directions on this Δ v/v waveguide is the surface acoustic wave convolver. However, a theoretical analysis on its efficiency is not sufficient. In the present research, the guided wave characteristics of this Δ v/v waveguide are derived accurately so that the nonlinear components generated on the waveguide are computed. The generation efficiency of the surface acoustic wave at the second harmonic generated from this mechanism in the direction orthogonal to the waveguide is analyzed theoretically. The conversion efficiency of the split waveguide‐type convolver proposed previously by the authors can be derived quantitatively so that the evaluation of the surface acoustic wave nonlinear device becomes possible.
