Third molar maturity index and legal age in different ethnic populations: Accuracy of Cameriere’s method

Abstract: Molar development is widely accepted as a reliable indicator of chronological age in a forensic context. A quantitative method for age estimation has been proposed by Cameriere et al. based on the relationship between chronological age and the third molar maturity index (I3M), which is the ratio between the two apical pulp widths and the total tooth length. Cameriere’s cut off value of 0.08 was found to be a reliable tool in assessing the threshold of 18 years of age. The aim of this study was to evaluate the … Show more

“…Regarding the Skeletal age estimation for forensic purposes, we consider ourselves useful for the direction of the 3D CNN on particular areas of the head and neck. Various experts published research on age estimation by measuring open apices in teeth, stage of teeth eruption, frequently of third molars or canine tooth/pulp ratio [6,17,18,20,21,[23][24][25]27,29,31]. In general, teeth are frequently used for age assessment, but they are not the only structures in the skull to be considered.…”

“…Ethnicity assessment and identification of skeletal remains are important and difficult tasks for forensic scientists with significant ethical and legal implications [ 1 ]. Numerous methods using craniofacial measurements and indexes are available and useful for these purposes [ 2 4 ]. The manner of determining the parameters needed for the estimation of these directories depends on the sort of samples used [ 5 ].…”

“…This method for the staging-age assignment is gender- and population-specific based on reference studies with corresponding reference tables [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. This reference ensures a differentiated view of tooth development and associated stages according to population- and nutrition-specific criteria [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. The mean ages assigned to the stages are given with the respective standard deviation and indicate a minimum and maximum age in each case.…”
