Thiol-Functionalized Pores via Post-Synthesis Modification in a Metal–Organic Framework with Selective Removal of Hg(II) in Water

Abstract: Owing to the rapid increase of Hg(II) ions in water resources, the design and development of new adsorbents for Hg(II) removal are becoming a significant challenge in environmental protection. Herein, a thiol-functionalized metal–organic framework (SH-MiL-68(In)) was successfully prepared through a post-synthesis modification procedure, and the framework intactness and porosity were well maintained after this process. SH-MiL-68(In) exhibited selective adsorption performance for Hg(II) ions in water. Meanw… Show more

“…In 2019, Gao‐Peng Li and coworkers prepared one water‐stable thiol functionalized MOF through a PSM method, which can remove Hg II ions in water efficiently . To obtain this MOF, one water‐stable MOF, NH 2 ‐MIL‐68(In), with the modifiable ‐NH 2 groups in ligands was selected.…”

“…A thiol-functionalized metal-organic framework (SH-MiL-68(In)) was prepared through a post-synthesis modification procedure, and was used as Hg(II) adsorbent from water [50]. Maximum adsorption was at pH 4 with a Hg(II) adsorption capacity of 2.24 mmol/g.…”

“…In previous studies, a variety of adsorbents have been used to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solutions, mainly including inorganic adsorbents, organic synthetic adsorbents and natural modified adsorbents . However, the existing adsorbent materials are usually difficult to prepare owing to the complex and expensive preparation process required, and some of them are likely to cause a waste disposal problem after the water treatment process . Meanwhile, we have long since lost sight of the adaptability of adsorbent materials to randomly changeable water environments in real applications; for example, the pollutant concentrations in water will vary randomly from mixtures of different emissions, and the water temperatures will also vary with different weather conditions, all of which require highly adaptable materials .…”
