A new actinomycete strain, LM 042 T , which was isolated from a gold-mine cave in Kongju, Republic of Korea, is described by phenotypic and genotypic characters. The organism formed short chains of non-motile spores and globose bodies from substrate mycelium. An aerial mycelium was absent. This organism was chemotaxonomically characterized by the presence of mesodiaminopimelic acid, rhamnose, xylose, glucose, mannose and ribose in wholecell hydrolysates (a type II cell wall and a variant of sugar pattern D), a glycolyl type of muramic acid, DNA GMC content of 70 4 mol %, a type PII phospholipid pattern (phosphatidylethanolamine as a diagnostic nitrogenous phospholipid), a tetrahydrogenated menaquinone with 10 isoprene units as a major menaquinone, and fatty acid profiles predominated by iso-branched hexadecanoic acid, iso-branched pentadecanoic acid and heptadcenoic acid. A comparative analysis of 16S rDNA sequences indicated that this organism formed a distinct clade within the evolutionary radiation of the family Micromonosporac eae and clustered with members of the genus Catellatospora. The 16S rDNA similarity values between the isolate and its phylogenetic neighbours, the two subspecies of Catellatospora citrea and Catellatospora tsunoense, were 95 0-95 2 % and 94 9 %, respectively. An equidistant relationship was observed among the isolate, Catellatospora ferruginea and all other members of the Micromonosporac eae genera (levels of similarity 93 0-94 0 %). The combination of physiological, chemotaxonomic and DNA-DNA hybridization data supported that this organism is a novel species of the genus Catellatospora, for which the name Catellatospora koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LM 042 T (l IMSNU 50729 T ).

Four strains of budding, hyphal bacteria, which had very similar chemotaxonomic properties, were isolated from the Baltic Sea. The results of DNA-DNA hybridization experiments, indicated that three of the new isolates were closely related, while the fourth was only moderately related to the other three. Sequence signature and higher-order structural detail analyses of the 16s rRNA of strain IFAM 141gT (T = type strain) indicated that this isolate is related to the alpha subclass of the class Proteobacteriu. Although our isolates resemble members of the genera Hyphomicrobium and Hyphomonas in morphology, assignment to either of these genera was excluded on the basis of their markedly lower DNA guanine-plus-cytosine contents. We propose that these organisms should be placed in a new genus, Hirschiu baltica is the type species of this genus, and the type strain of H. bdtica is strain IFAM 1418 (= DSM 5838).Since the first description of a hyphal, budding bacterium, Hyphomicrobium vulgare (53), only the following additional genera having this morphological type have been formally described: Rhodomicrobium (9), Hyphomonas (40), Pedomicrobium (1, 14), Filomicrobium (49, and Dichotomicrobium (23). The taxonomy of these bacteria has been evaluated by using chemotaxonomic characteristics (56), DNA-DNA hybridization (15, 37), genome size determination (28), analysis of nucleotide distribution and DNA base ratio (16), and analysis of RNA cistron similarities (42). Phylogenetically , all of the above-mentioned genera are members of the alpha subclass of the class Proteobacteria, and they are not closely related to each other (51).In this paper we characterize genomically and phenetically four new isolates of budding, hyphal bacteria which have DNA base ratios of 45 to 47 mol%, values which are at least 10 mol% lower than the DNA base ratios of other hyphal, budding members of the Proteobacteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS Enrichment and isolation.At various times surface water samples (upper 5 cm) of the Kiel Fjord were taken from a boat landing. Different methods were used to enrich for budding, hyphal bacteria immediately after the samples arrived in our laboratory (Table 1). When a microscopic survey indicated the presence of such organisms, streaks were made on solidified M13 medium (44). Colonies were examined microscopically by using the toothpick procedure (23). Pure cultures were obtained within 6 months after sampling.Physiological tests. The isolates were grown in complex M13 medium, which contained 0.025% glucose, 0.025% peptone, and 0.025% yeast extract as carbon and nitrogen sources. A novel actinomycete, strain KST3-10T, was isolated from sand sediment of a beach in Jeju, Korea, and was subjected to polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The organism produced circular, smooth, translucent, apricot-coloured colonies comprising coccoid- or rod-shaped cells. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism belonged to the family Geodermatophilaceae and consistently formed a distinct sub-branch outside the radiation of the genus Blastococcus. The organism showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 98.2 % with respect to Blastococcus aggregatus DSM 4725T and 98.1 % with respect to Blastococcus saxobsidens BC444T. The type strains of the two Blastococcus species shared 98.2 % sequence similarity with respect to each other, whereas the levels of sequence similarity between the novel organism and the type strains of the less closely related neighbours, Modestobacter multiseptatus and Geodermatophilus obscurus, were in the range 96.2–96.9 %. The physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic data revealed that the novel organism can be readily differentiated from members of the genus Blastococcus and that it merits separate species status. On the basis of the phenotypic and genotypic evidence, strain KST3-10T represents a novel species of the genus Blastococcus, for which the name Blastococcus jejuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KST3-10T (=NRRL B-24440T=KCCM 42251T).
