THGEM-based photon detectors for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1

Abstract: New Cherenkov photon detectors are being developed for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The detectors are based on THGEMs, arranged in a three layer architecture, with a CsI film on the first layer acting as a reflective photocathode. The response of THGEMs with various geometries under different conditions has been studied and photon detector prototypes have been built, tested in laboratory and operated during test beam runs providing a typical gain of 105 and a time resolution of better than 10 ns. “…For example, the Digital, or Semi-Digital Hadron Calorimeter ((S)DHCAL) [9,10], foreseen for the SiD experiment in the future international linear collider (ILC) [11], the overall instrumented area will be as large as ∼4000 m 2 . Another application could be photon detection for large-area UV-RICH detectors [12,13]. Previous studies with large area THGEM detectors are described in [14] and in [15]; in the latter, two 30 × 30 cm 2 double-faced THGEM electrodes in cascade are followed by a MICROMEGAS.…”

“…An Ar/CH 4 (60/40) gas mixture was used, and the high voltage was provided to each of the six sectors of the PD via individual resistive dividers by six independent power supply channels. A truncated cone radiator (made of fused silica) was placed on the beam axis and equipped with a cylindrical interceptor having a remotely controlled movement: the number of detected photons per event was shown to decrease linearly with the increase of the interceptor position [6]. A trigger system based on a 5-fold scintillator coincidence allowed selecting beam particles traveling along the radiator axis.…”

“…In this context, Gaseous Photodetectors [6] employing Multiwire [10] and Drift [11] Chambers, Multi-step avalanche chambers [12], cascaded GEMs [13][14][15] and THGEM-based [16][17][18][19] detectors have been playing an important role in experiments. As demonstrated in [20], the more recent "hybrid" CsI-coated THGEM-Micromegas has shown to be an efficient upgrade for the COMPASS-RICH-I.…”
