Status and progress of novel photon detectors based on THGEM and hybrid MPGD architectures

Abstract: Recent progress in the development of THGEM-based photon detectors confirm the validity of this novel technology. Detectors made of THGEMs, arranged in a three layer architecture, with a CsI coating on the first layer (acting as a reflective photocathode), have been produced and operated in laboratory and during test beam runs: they provide a gain of 105 and a time resolution better than 10 ns. Improvements in the production of THGEMs with 300 × 300 mm2 active area have recently been introduced leading to a un… Show more

“…They have intrinsic mechanical stiffness, and are robust against damages produced by occasional electrical discharges. Efforts have resulted in improved electrical stability by using a dedicated polishing protocol applied to the industrially-produced THGEM electrodes; an increased gain uniformity in large-size multiplier is reached by careful control of the electrode-thickness uniformity [20].…”

“…The breakdown voltage of a no-rim THGEM structure is given by the Paschen's law and reaches ∼2200 V for a 400 µmthick structure in air. Experience shows, however, that large-area THGEMs rarely reach this value due to irregular hole borders and defects related to the production procedure [7]. Therefore, a dedicated post-production treatment is necessary in order to smooth out the hole edges and remove defects or other imperfections coming from the drilling of the holes.…”

“…For STCF barrel PID, it is required that the detector is able to operated at high luminosity environment, the martial budge is less than 20%, and thickness of the detector is less than 20 cm. In order to meet those requirements, the hybrid micro-patter gas detector(MPGD) [5] based RICH detector with approximate focusing design is adopted as the baseline design.…”

“…The STCF RICH detector consists of a layer of CsI coated thick gas electron multipliers (THGEM) [6] and a resistive MicroMegas (MM) [7] on a pad segmented anode. The MPGD detector has been demonstrated to be able to operate under a high counting rate with lower ion back-flow suppression while maintaining a high effective gain [5,8]. The CsI coated THGEM acts as a reflective photo-cathode.…”
