Abstract: Figure 1. The presence of an audience impacts the user's behavior in front of a public display. High audience cardinality, glances towards the user and close physical distance between the audience and the display, contribute to increasing user-display distance, decreasing interaction time and discouraging interaction in general.

“…At the same time, public display deployments pose considerable effort to researchers [29,54,72]: researchers face the challenge of finding suitable locations for their deployment [24,32], as a result of which deployments are often opportunistic [11,26]; hardware needs to be maintained and software run in a stable manner [43]; and data collection is time-consuming as researchers need to be present in the display vicinity for observations and subsequent interviews [8,43].…”

“…Considering the broad age range and abilities of our participants, we were aware that it would have been quite challenging to design an interaction that could be stimulating and at the same time easy to use. The design of the Interactive Art Jigsaw was based on a previous deployment [16] and adapted according to the specific needs of our user (children) sample. 2 Without loss of clarity and/or generality, in the paper's figures we depicted only one painting, due to copyright restrictions.…”

“…Apart from implicit interaction, many prior works investigated explicit interaction, allowing for modalities beyond keys and buttons, such as touch [37], touchless mid-air gestures [20], feet-based input [42], mobile devices [35], eye gaze [28], or multi-modal combinations of them [30]. Touch interfaces are currently the most used in common public displays, and they represented a significant improvement if compared to physical hardware (e.g.…”
