Thermoplastic Composites and Their Promising Applications in Joining and Repair Composites Structures: A Review

Abstract: Thermoset fiber reinforced composites, widely used in current structural applications, have complex repair procedures and generates significant amounts of scrap due to its recycling difficulties, which does not comply with the most recent environmental restrictions. These disadvantages may be overcome by using a thermoplastic matrix phase, which is very suitable to be joined and repaired by local melting, making the composite material fully recyclable. This work presents a literature review on the joining meth… Show more

“…The use of thermoplastic polymers in FRP composites has been growing in the past decade, particularly for applications in the transportation and energy fields [65,66]. The main advantages of thermoplastics, when compared to thermosets, is their ability to be processed and thermoformed multiple times.…”

“…Fiber reinforced plastics use two types of matrix materials, thermosets and thermoplastics. Thermoplastic materials are preferred because of their sustainability features, ease of production, re-formability [11].…”

“…In addition, Arkema recently developed a liquid thermoplastic resin with similar mechanical properties to thermosetting resins, Elium ® , which enables the use of composite manufacturing technologies traditionally used for thermosets [6]. As thermoplastics can be thermoformed when heated up above certain temperatures, TPCs have the potential for recycling, reuse and reshaping into new components, as well as joining through fusion bonding [7]. The latter can eliminate the use of rivets, reducing weight, cost and stress concentration.…”
