Thermographic imaging as alternative method in allergy diagnosis

Abstract: Allergen sensitization is being diagnosed by commonly available methods in clinical practice-skin prick tests (SPTs) and specific immunoglobulin E test (sIgE). Recently, a new thermographic (TH) method for the assessment of SPT was developed, and it was demonstrated that the TH measurements of forearm temperature distribution during SPT, supported by a mathematical model, offer a new quantification method of allergen-induced skin reactions. The aim of this study is a comprehensive comparison of the TH method w… Show more

“…were controlled following the guidelines for thermographic measurements in medical applications given by the European Association of Thermology [49]. Thermography is well known and scientifically approved method of temperature distribution measurements in medicine and physiotherapy [50] and thus often used for screen tests [51,52], early diagnosis [53,54], or treatment personalization [19,55] etc.…”

“…The lower panels of Figure 2 show how the inflammatory changes reverted after antihistamine administration. The use of IRT for assessing allergy skin prick tests demonstrated a sensitivity of 72%-93% and a specificity of 60%-88%; thus, this imaging modality can be used to automatize and objectivize the test procedure particularly when paired with computer visioning AI techniques [ 12 , 13 ].…”

“…Thermal temperature mapping has also been used in skin lesion differentiation [25] and rosacea pattern detection [26]. It is also used for the measurement of distribution of superficial temperature for inter alia screening tests [27], diagnosis [28], treatment or performance assessment [29][30][31], physiotherapeutic procedure evaluation [32][33][34], personalized medicine [2], and prevention [35,36].…”
