Use of Infrared Thermal Imaging for Assessing Acute Inflammatory Changes: A Case Series

Abstract: Infrared thermal imaging is a non-contact imaging modality that captures the heat emitted by the human body. Thermal regulation or heat load to the different body parts is mainly regulated via blood supply, which is increased during inflammation. The assessment of the body's level of inflammation with pain, erythema and heat is subjective clinical measurement. Infrared imaging can be an objective tool for identifying and following inflammatory and perfusion changes, thereby helping clinicians locate and docume… Show more

“…The clients (same person for all assessments) were given the Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI) questionnaire to assess a subject's pain conditions (severity and interference scores) at Week 0, Week 2, Week 4, and Week 8. [43][44][45][46]…”

“…Thermal imaging offers an objective and repeatable measure of wound surface temperature (SWT) for clinical decision making (Ramirez-GarciaLuna et al, 2022). The product of this remains relative, however, absolute values as could be obtained with thermal imaging camera would have a more resounding clinical relevance that could aid early detection of circulatory problems, inflammation, poor wound healing and possibly give a clue into possible systemic conditions, without having to come into touch with the animal or the wound bed which minimizes the possibility of wound contamination (Ramirez-GarciaLuna et al, 2022). This method is also patientfriendly, accurate and offers a clear picture of the distribution of a patient's body temperature, establishing the animal's surface temperature using the infrared thermography.…”
