A series of new N-butylammonium carboxylate ionic liquids (N-butylammonium formate, N-butylammonium acetate, N-butylammonium propionate, and N-butylammonium butyrate) were synthesized by a one-step method and characterized. The thermodynamic properties such as surface tension, density, electrical conductivity, and dynamic viscosity of the ILs were measured as functions of temperature. Important parameters such as molecular volume, crystal energy, thermal expansion coefficient, standard molar entropy, and the surface properties are estimated by the empirical equations. The Vogel−Fulcher−Tamman (VFT) equation is used to explore the dependence of electrical conductivities and dynamic viscosities on temperature. The relationship between the molar conductivity and the fluidity of the ILs was examined through the use of Walden plots. To describe intermolecular interactions of the N-butylammonium carboxylate ILs, the optimized structures and energetics of ILs are calculated by DFT calculations. The calculated energies showed that the increase in the interaction energies between the ion clusters is the same as the trend of experimental viscosities.

Use of Nonideality Parameters for the Analysis of the Thermodynamic Properties of Binary Mixtures

Two parameters are introduced, a nonideality index (NII) and a nonideality area (NIA), for the analysis of the variations of thermodynamic properties of binary mixtures. Their calculation is based, for the NII, on experimental plots of the variation of a given property (density, refractive index, viscosity, etc.), and for the NIA, on experimental plots of its excess value (excess enthalpies, molar volumes, viscosities, refractive indices, isentropic compressibilities, etc.) with the mixture composition. Both nonideality parameters are therefore not based on any theoretical model or on its derived parameters, being applicable with any fitting equation. The NII or NIA values for a thermodynamic property of a series of related binary mixtures reveal interesting trends, which are not evident in most analyses of such systems. Besides their predictive value, these trends provide information on the relevance of solvent characteristics of the binary mixture, thus supporting new insights or interpretations of the experimental data.

Reference Correlation for the Viscosity of Ethanol from the Triple Point to 620 K and Pressures Up to 102 MPa

We present a wide-ranging correlation expressed in terms of temperature and density for the viscosity of ethanol based on critically evaluated experimental data. The correlation is designed to be used with an existing equation of state from the triple point (159 K) to 620 K and at pressures up to 102 MPa. Comparisons with experimental data indicate the estimated uncertainty of the correlation is 4.2 % (at the 95 % confidence level) for the liquid and supercritical phase at pressures up to 102 MPa, and 2 % in the gas phase. Furthermore, for calculating viscosity values at 0.1 MPa, an additional correlation is proposed, valid from the triple point to the boiling point with an estimated uncertainty of 2.3 % (at the 95 % confidence level).
