Thermodynamic properties and drying kinetics of Bauhinia forficata Link leaves

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe aim of this study was to determine the effective diffusion coefficient and the thermodynamic properties of Bauhinia forficata Link leaves, considering two forms of thickness measurements and to describe the process by fitting mathematical models. The leaves were collected, taken to the laboratory and prepared to start the drying process in which four temperatures (40, 50, 60 and 70 °C) were applied. After the drying process, the effective diffusion coefficient was determined through the theo… Show more

“…Thickness (L) was measured using a digital micrometer, with resolution of 0.001 mm. To obtain the average thickness of Piper aduncum leaves, 50 leaves were randomly chosen among the set of leaves which were going to be dried, and readings were taken at six preestablished points, three on each side of the midrib (Silva et al, 2017).…”

“…According to Silva, Siqueira, Martins, Miranda and Melo (2017), along the drying process it is interesting to not only describe the drying kinetics, but also to monitor the thermodynamic properties. They provide important information on the properties of water and on the energy required in the process, such as enthalpy and entropy, which characterize variations existing in the water-product system (Corrêa, Oliveira, Botelho, Goneli, & Carvalho, 2010).…”

“…Such resistance is probably caused by the higher rigidity and thickness of C. pachystachya leaves, but Silva et al (2017a) highlight the importance of also considering the chemical composition as a factor that influences diffusivity.…”

“…Various drying conditions should be tested to adjust the characteristics of each product during moisture content reduction, and theoretical mathematical models have been constantly used in literature to predict this phenomenon (Silva et al, 2017a;Maciel et al, 2017;Sonmete et al, 2017).…”

“…The drying of leaves of medicinal plants has been studied by several researchers, aiming to provide technical information of this important post-harvest stage for the more efficient processing of these products. Most studies of drying of leaves of medicinal plants evaluate only the effect of different drying air temperatures on the process (Reis et al, 2012;Goneli et al, 2014;Silva et al, 2015;Melo et al, 2016;Silva et al, 2017).…”
