The present work discusses the adsorptive removal of a phenolic pollutant, i.e., 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), using low cost untreated agricultural waste pine cone powder (PCP). The present biosorbent was thoroughly characterized with the help of FTIR, SEM, XRD, and CHN analysis. The presence of amine (-NH 2 ), hydroxyl (-OH) and carbonyl (C=O) functional groups was detected by the FTIR analysis. The important biosorption factors like agitation time, biomass dosage, initial adsorbate concentration, and the initial pH were examined by batch studies. The biosorption kinetic process was fast, reaching equilibrium in 75 min. The experimental kinetic data revealed an excellent agreement with the pseudo second order (PSO) model. On the other hand, the Langmuir isotherm model best described the equilibrium data with the maximum biosorption capacity (q max ) of 243.90 mg/g. These values are better than the adsorption capacities of most agro-based untreated adsorbents previously reported in the literature. Owing to fast removal rates and high biosorption capacity, PCP can be used for cost-effective treatment of TCP from aqueous streams.Processes 2019, 7, 757 2 of 17 to develop cost-effective treatment strategy for the contaminated waste-water prior to release into the environment.The elimination of organic contaminants from the waste-water effluents using various methods like physical (membrane filtration, adsorption, biosorption and solvent extraction), chemical-biological oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, photocatalytic degradation, microbial degradation, ion exchange resins, catalytic oxidation, advanced oxidation processes have been proposed in the recent literature [9][10][11][12]. Among these techniques, the biosorption using various agricultural wastes has been thoroughly investigated for the elimination of organic contaminants and heavy metals from the standpoint of cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly considerations [13][14][15][16][17]. Several studies proved biosorption is a simple yet effective method for the elimination of pollutants, in which the significant factor is the utilization of agricultural wastes. Many authors highlighted the fact that the biosorption of phenol and phenolic derivatives using lignocellulosic residues and agricultural by-products do not require recycling and regeneration studies due to their low-cost and abundant availability in nature [2,[18][19][20][21].Pine trees annually produce large amounts of pine cones as an agricultural waste. Each cone consists of an axis, which is composed of several woody scales arranged in a spiral fashion. Most industrial waste discharges are often contaminated with phenolic compounds, which constitute a major source of water pollution owing to their toxicity and low biodegradability. Development of cost-effective treatment of such industrial wastewater is therefore of paramount importance. Towards this end, we explore the efficacy of Pine bark powder (PBP), which is an agricultural solid waste material, as a low-cost biosorbent without any pre-treatment, for the adsorptive removal of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) from aqueous media. The PBP was thoroughly characterized and the effect of important adsorption parameters were examined in the present investigation. The batch equilibrium data were analyzed using well-known isotherm models. Freundlich isotherm model provided the best description of the equilibrium biosorption behavior. At 25 ± 1 °C, the maximum biosorption capacity (q max) was 289.09 mg/g, which is higher than most biosorbents reported in the literature while the removal as high as 97% was obtained. Moreover, the biosorption process was fast, attaining equilibrium in less than 120 min of contact. The Elovich model accurately described the kinetics data. In view of high biosorption capacity and fast removal rates, PBP can be used for an efficient and cost-effective treatment of 2,4,6-TCP contaminated wastewater.

Activated carbons (ACs) display attractive gravimetric performance for CO2 capture, but it is unclear which carbon precursor suits preparation of ACs with high adsorption performance on a volumetric basis. Thus, we prepared ACs from five feedstocks (bamboo, rice husk, peanut shell, coconut shell, and anthracite) to study impacts of the feedstock type on the densities, volumetric pore parameters, and volumetric CO2 adsorption performance of ACs. The feedstock type was found to affect tap density of ACs, mainly because ACs possessed different macropore volumes. Because of the influence of tap density, the decreasing order of ACs for volumetric pore parameters was different from that for the corresponding gravimetric parameters. When AC was expected to display a high volumetric fine micropore volume (V <0.7 nm,v and V <1 nm,v), its tap density and gravimetric fine micropore volume should be both high. The feedstock type affected the volumetric CO2 uptakes of ACs at 0.15 and 1 bar, mainly because it changed volumetric fine micropore volume (V <0.7 nm,v and V <1 nm,v). The CO2/N2 selectivity of ACs was impacted by feedstock type, because ACs had different ultramicropore/micropore volume ratios (V <0.7 nm/V micro) and nitrogen contents. The feedstock type also affected the volumetric CO2 adsorption rate of ACs, because ACs had different volumetric micropore volumes (V <1 nm,v and V 1–2 nm,v). Coconut shell was the most suitable feedstock for the preparation of the carbonaceous CO2 adsorbent used in the adsorption bed, because of the high volumetric CO2 adsorption capacity, superior volumetric adsorption rate, and acceptable CO2/N2 selectivity of the yielded AC. This study showed the necessity to evaluate ACs by their volumetric CO2 capture performance and provided an effective way to tune this performance via a rational choice of carbon precursor.
