Thermo‐sensitive amphiphilic poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam) copolymers: synthesis and solution properties

Abstract: Thermo-sensitive amphiphilic copolymers, PVCL-PTrpAMT and PVCL-PVP-PTrpAMT of hydrophilic N-vinylcaprolactam (VCL), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), and hydrophobic N-t-Boc-tryptophanamido-N(-methacryl thioureas (TrpAMT) monomers, were synthesized and characterized by 1 H NMR, UV-spectroscopy, and GPC-MALLS. The cloud point (CP) measurement showed that hydrophobic PTrpAMT and hydrophilic PVP segments significantly altered the phase transition temperature of PVCL with comparable molecular weight in aqueous solution. T… Show more

“…The swelling to shrinking transition is continuous and T tr shifts to higher values with increasing comonomer content. Furthermore, the dependence of the Flory-Huggins A c c e p t e d M a n u s c r i p t 14 interaction parameter (χ = 0.522 + 0.212 V B + 0.656V B 2 ) on the volume fraction of the polymer in the hydrogel is reported for uncharged PNVCL network swollen in water [41]. More recently, microgels of PNVCL were studied regarding their thermoresponsive behavior by light scattering and transverse relaxation NMR measurements [42].…”

“…2A, although such a kind of microspheres was hydrophilic, it still showed a little hydrophobicity with a small contact angle observed. However, after NVP, widely used in the synthesis of copolymer as a hydrophilic monomer [28][29][30], was modified onto the particle surface by free radical polymerization between carbon-carbon double bonds. Water film was completely spread on the surface, with contact angle as zero, as shown in Fig.…”

“…Interestingly, a range of PNIPAM-based block polymers, such as poly(t-butyl acrylate)-b-PNIPAM, PNIPAM-b-poly(tetramethylene carbonate), and PNIPAM-bpoly(hydroyethyl acrylate), were synthesized for targeted and controlled drug delivery systems, and their thermosensitive micellar behaviors were examined [7][8][9]. Poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) is a thermosensitive polymer that is biocompatible and soluble in water below a LCST of ∼32°C [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The LCST is dependent on its concentration, molecular weight, and composition.…”
