Thermal Hydrogenation. Transfer of Hydrogen from Tetralin to Cracked Residua

Abstract: Crude residua can be thermally cracked to more valuable products by using a reaction diluent such as Tetralin, which gives up hydrogen to cracked residua. The Tetralin is dehydrogenated to naphthalene, and the residua are converted into lower boiling products with little coke and dry gas.

“…The importance of the use of solvents to mitigate coke formation during the thermal decomposition of petroleum has been recognized for many years (Carlson et al, 1958;Langer et al, 1961Langer et al, , 1962Hill et al, 1968), but their effects have been correctly ascribed to hydrogen donor reactions that have an inhibiting effect on the formation of the molecular species that are prone to phase separation. The separation of the phases depends on the solvent characteristics of the liquid.…”

“…The presence of a material with good solvating power to diminish the possibility of coke formation is preferred. In this respect it is worth noting the reappearance of donor solvent processing of heavy oils [59,100], which has its roots in the older hydrogen donor diluent visbreaking process [7,10,52]. a -Hydrocracking is an extremely versatile process that can be utilized in many different ways. One of the advantages of hydrocracking is its ability to break down high-boiling aromatic stocks produced by catalytic cracking or coking.…”
