Selection for papaya resistance to multiple diseases in a base population of recurrent selectionABSTRACT: Papaya has a narrow genetic base concerning disease resistance, with few genetically distinct cultivars for planting in the world. Losses in crop production caused by fungal and viral diseases, added to the absence of resistant cultivars available to producers, have reduced the competitiveness of crops. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the direct and combined genetic gains in the base population of the recurrent papaya selection and to indicate promising individuals for resistance to phoma spot and black spot. The population used in this study originated from the crossing of dioecious, female individuals and holders of a gene pool for resistance to phoma spot and black spot.These were crossed with elite individuals with a gene pool for production traits and fruit quality. The experiment was carried out without an experimental design, containing one plant per plot. Three measurements were taken on 255 individuals for five traits of disease resistance, being: four associated with black spot (incidence and severity on the leaf and fruit) and one associated with phoma spot (severity on the leaf). With the observations obtained, the REML/BLUP procedure was performed to estimate the temporary and permanent environmental effects. Such values were used to know the genetic parameters of the population and to elaborate a combined selection index, as well as to compare the gains with the direct selection. The results indicate low repeatability for the traits and that the gains obtained from the use of the combined selection index better rank the genotypes in comparison to the gains obtained by direct selection.

In agriculture, the control of fungal infections is essential to improve crop quality and productivity. This study describes the preparation and fungicidal activity evaluation of 12 glycerol derivatives bearing 1,2,3-triazole fragments. The derivatives were prepared from glycerol in four steps. The key step corresponded to the Cu(I)-catalyzed alkyne−azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction between the azide 4-(azidomethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane (3) and different terminal alkynes (57−91% yield). The compounds were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H and 13 C), and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The in vitro assessment of the compounds on Asperisporium caricae, that is, the etiological agent of papaya black spot, at 750 mg L −1 showed that the glycerol derivatives significantly inhibited conidial germination with different degrees of efficacy. The most active compound 4-(3-chlorophenyl)-1-((2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole (4c) presented a 91.92% inhibition. In vivo assays revealed that 4c reduced the final severity (70.7%) and area under the disease severity progress curve of black spots on papaya fruits 10 days after inoculation. The glycerol-bearing 1,2,3-triazole derivatives also present agrochemicallikeness properties. Our in silico study using molecular docking calculations show that all triazole derivatives bind favorably to the sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) active site at the same region of the substrate lanosterol (LAN) and fungicide propiconazole (PRO). Thus, the mechanism of action of the compounds 4a−4l may be the same as the fungicide PRO, blocking the entrance/ approximation of the LAN into the CYP51 active site by steric effects. The reported results point to the fact that the glycerol derivatives may represent a scaffold to be explored for the development of new chemical agents to control papaya black spot.

Geotechnology Applied to Analysis of Vegetation Dynamics and Occurrence of Forest Fires on Indigenous Lands in Cerrado-Amazonia Ecotone

The Cerrado-Amazonia Ecotone is one of the largest ecosystems in Brazil and is internationally considered a biodiversity hotspot. The occurrence of fires is common in these areas, directly affecting biomass losses and the reduction of vegetative vigor of forest typologies. Information obtained through remote sensing and geoprocessing can assist in the evaluation of vegetation behavior and its relation to the occurrence of forest fires. In this context, the objective of the present study was to analyze temporal vegetation dynamics, as well as their relationship with rainfall and fire occurrence on Indigenous lands, located in the Cerrado-Amazonia Ecotone of Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images of the MOD13Q1 MODIS product and burnt area of the MCD45A1 MODIS product, and rainfall images from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) sensor were used. The period analyzed was from 2007 to 2016. After pre-processing the NDVI, TRMM and burnt area images, correlation analyses were performed between the rainfall, vegetation index and burnt area images, considering different lags (−3 to 3), to obtain the best response time for the variables. The analyses of inter-annual vegetation index trends were carried out following Mann–Kendall monotonic trend and seasonal trend analysis methodologies. Significant correlations were observed between NDVI and rainfall (R = 0.84), in grass regions and between NDVI and burnt area (R = −0.74). The Mann–Kendall monotonic trend indicates vegetation index stability with positive variations in grass regions. The analysis of seasonal trends identified different vegetation responses, with this biome presenting a diverse phytophysiognomy and seasonal vegetation with different phases for amplitudes. This variation is evidenced by the various phytophysiognomies and their responses in relation to biomass gains and losses. The correlation and regression of the NDVI and rainfall in the vegetation type of grass areas show that the burnt area tends to increase with the reduction of NDVI. Finally, no defined pattern of vegetation cycles or phases was observed in terms of seasonality and the proposed methodology can be adapted to other world biomes.
