Thermal Effectiveness of Different IR Radiators Employed in Rheumatoid Hand Therapy as Assessed by Thermovisual Examination

Abstract: We conducted a thermovisual comparison of mean hand surface temperature changes upon local heating with two different IR sources. Sixty-six patients with rheumatoid arthritis (47 women and 19 men; average age, 56.1 ± 8.6 years) were subjected to topical heat therapy for one hand with either the standard IR radiator (SIR) or the water filter IRA (wIRA). The surface temperature of the dorsal side of both hands was measured, and thermal images were taken before and up to 2 h after treatment. At 1 min after treatm… Show more

“…There are some publications describing the application of thermal imaging for the assessment of the physical treatment effectiveness [18][19][20]. However, as so far, no studies are reported describing temperature changes after combination of selected physical treatments and examining time interval, in which the temperature returns to initial values.…”

“…Most of them have thermal effects, resulting in a change of the temperature in the treated area [4]. Thermal imaging is one of the most sufficient methods of superficial temperature distribution examination [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…Thermal imaging is frequently used in the field of physiotherapy as a method that allows to assess the temperature distribution on the human skin after various physiotherapeutic procedures [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Thermal imaging in medical diagnostics is a valuable complement to routinely used diagnosis methods.…”
