Thermal dissociation of ions limits the degree of the gas‐phase H/D exchange at the atmospheric pressure

Abstract: We present the application of the extended desolvating capillaries for increasing the degree of the gas-phase hydrogen/deuterium exchange reaction at atmospheric pressure. The use of the extended capillaries results in the increase of the time that ions spend in the high pressure region, what leads to the significant improvement of the efficiency of the reaction. For the small protein ubiquitin, it was observed that for the same temperature, the number of exchanges increases with the decrease of the charge sta… Show more

“…It is also possible to couple the multiplexed ion source to the gas phase H/D exchange reaction. Recently we have presented a simple approach to perform in-ESI source H/D exchange. ,, Droplet of D 2 O is placed beneath the desolvating capillary. Because of the evaporation, the desolvating capillary becomes saturated with D 2 O vapors, ions interact with D 2 O, and exchange its labile hydrogens for deuterium.…”

“…Increasing the reaction time by increasing the length of the desolvating capillary can help to increase the degree of the exchange. 51,52 The determination of the activation energy is shown in the Figure 5B. We can see that for [IO 3 ] − and [I 3 O 13 ] − ions the charts obtained using eq 15 have the form of almost perfect lines.…”

“…The effect of back exchange is negligible because the atmosphere in the ESI source is saturated with D 2 O. Increasing the reaction time by increasing the length of the desolvating capillary can help to increase the degree of the exchange. , …”
