Thermal Diffusion Factor of Neon from Column Measurements

Abstract: Thermal diffusion factor of neon at 300.5 °K has been determined to be 0.0205 ± 0.002, by means of separation studies, with and without the introduction of spacers, in a hot-wire thermal diffusion column of 1.42 m length. The theory propounded earlier by the authors for evaluation of parasitic remixing is used. Within the experimental error the above value agrees fairly well with the calculated value on the basis of exp −6 potential model.

“…The investigation of parasitic remixing and a partial elimination of it has been undertaken by several workersY- 22 have studied the vibration of the wire resulting from ac heating, and also ways of damping it. In fact, this is one of the preferred methods of obtaining small amounts of highly enriched isotopes for laboratory studies.…”

“…A plot of (AL)n/ L versus n yields the optimum value, (AL) opt/ L, of (AL)n/ L. According to Raman et al,22 the column approaches the ideal operation without any asymmetries and eddy currents (introduced by the spacers) at this optimum value. Hence the equilibrium separation factor under this condition may be taken as qth, and…”
