Thermal Design of an Integrated Inductor for 45kW Aerospace Starter-Generator

Abstract: This paper presents a combined electromagnetic and thermal design of integrated inductor, for the application of a 45kW aircraft starter-generator. The inductor is designed at high current density by using the apporach ofarea product, followed by the finite element analysis, which validates the electromagnetic performance of integrated inductor. The total power losses at 8, 20, and 32kRPM are evaluated in order to investigate the thermal design of a combined starter-generator and integrated inductor system, wh… Show more

“…In comparison, the rotational inductor can only be used for high-speed motor drive systems, with the advantage of reducing a portion of the magnetic loss inside the rotor. In [12], a design of an integrated rotor-less inductor is presented which to be implanted for 45 kW motor-drive in aircraft applications. The impact of high current density, on inductor's mass and volume, has been investigated and compared against the conventional EE-core inductor.…”

“…Integration of power electronic components [64][65][66] within the electric machine is being actively researched. Integration of passive components such as inductors has been explored in [67][68][69][70]. Integration of electric machine rotor with the impeller of fan [71] and propeller [72] are also investigated.…”

“…This increases the stator winding loss, thereby generating heat inside the inductor's windings that is taken out of the starter-generator by the existing cooling system, where the inductor's stator is flooded with the engine oil. In [27], a thermal design investigation of an integrated inductor system and a combined starter-generator is presented where complete integration is achieved from thermal and physical points of view.…”
