Thermal Conversion Behavior of Medium–Low–Temperature Coal Tar Pitch During Liquid–Phase Carbonization Process

Abstract: Medium–low temperature coal tar pitch (MLP) is a type of aromatic carbonaceous material obtained by the low temperature distillation of low rank coal, and is considered as a desirable raw material for the production of artificial carbon/graphite material. The thermal conversion behaviors of MLP during the liquid‐phase carbonization process were analyzed in detail in this study. Further, the changes of molecular structure and carbon microcrystalline structure of MLP and liquid‐phase carbonization products deriv… Show more

“…According to the results listed in Table 4, the most abundant microstructure subtype in MLP‐C samples is a mosaic structure, particularly medium mosaic and coarse mosaic structure. This finding is in line with our previous study 1 and other literature reports, 23 confirming that the microstructure of mesophase coke produced by direct liquid carbonization of MLP consists of a mosaic structure.…”

“…Medium–low‐temperature coal tar pitch is an organic material with a high content of carbon, but with a lower amount of aromatic compounds compared to high‐temperature analogs 1,2 . The unique physicochemical properties of medium–low‐temperature coal tar pitch (MLP) make it an interesting material in many research fields 3 .…”

“…The I D3 /I All in RPP‐O1‐C RPP‐O3‐C, and RPP‐O4‐C were 13.66%, 13.74%, and 12.57%, respectively. The higher oxidation degree of RPP meant for higher content of the oxygen‐containing functional groups, the oxygen‐containing functional groups can also act as the active sites to participate in the condensation reaction during the liquid‐phase carbonization process 10,30,31 . The aromatic condensation degree may be improved during the carbonization process.…”

“…In recent years, the efficient and high value‐added utilization of coal pitch has been a common research topic 5–8 . Coal pitch is usually divided into four categories in literature: high‐temperature coal tar pitch, 9 medium‐low‐temperature pitch, 10 coal liquefied pitch, 11 and synthesized pitch 12,13 …”
