Thermal Aspects in Edge Trimming of Bio-Filled GFRP: Influence of Fiber Orientation and Silica Sand Filler in Heat Generation

Abstract: The present work aims to determine the influence of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminating configuration in heat generation during the dry edge trimming process. Temperature measurement experiments were conducted on pure epoxy matrix, 15% unidirectional glass fiber reinforced epoxy, and 28% silica sand-filled GFRP specimens through eight type-K thermocouples evenly distributed along the trim plans and connected to a data acquisition system. Infrared thermographic measurements were also conducted to i… Show more

“…As a result of the damage, the mechanical strength of the machined parts is subsequently reduced [2][3][4][5][6]. There have been many studies on the issue of delamination during milling [7][8][9][10][11][12], etc., but the studies were mostly not focused on the milling of composite materials from glass fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRP). Very few other studies have been developed on the process of milling of GFRP materials [5,13], etc.…”

“…The effect of the glass fiber reinforcement and particulate filler is examined by many researchers. For instance, Elfarhani et al [ 22 ] examined the influence of the laminating configuration of a glass fiber-reinforced polymer, during the dry edge trimming process. Sattar et al [ 23 ] tested composites made of a 1″ long glass fiber, incorporated within a polyamide 6 (nylon) matrix.…”

“…A study by Bin et al [23] explored the chip formation mechanisms and chip morphology during composite machining and investigated the impact of cutting parameters on chip thickness, curling, and chip evacuation. Elfarhani et al and Shyha et al [24][25] investigated the thermal aspects of edge trimming in bio-filled GFRP, analyzing the impact of fiber orientation and silica sand filler on heat generation; valuable insights were gained regarding the thermal behavior during edge trimming operations.…”
