Thermal Analysis and Sensitivity Studies on Guanylurea Dinitramide (GUDN or FOX-12) Based Melt Cast Explosive Formulations

Abstract: Guanylurea dinitramide ) is a stable salt of dinitramidic acid with good thermal stability, and is a good candidate for insensitive formulations. Thermal analysis reveals the compatibility of GUDN with benchmark explosives such as RDX and TNT in melt cast explosive formulations. The paper describes a thermal and sensitivity study of GUDN with RDX and TNT. In the present study GUDN was evaluated as a possible replacement for RDX/ TNT based aluminized and non aluminized melt cast explosive formulations. The ther… Show more

“…In line with FOX-7, FOX-12 also decomposed exothermically at 209.2 °C [36] which matches well with the literature. A shift in the decomposition temperature of FOX-12 was observed as the composition of the formulation was changed from 5 to 15 parts.…”

“…By virtue of a lower sensitivity, non-hygroscopicity, and thermal stability, FOX-12 is considered to be a promising candidate for use in low sensitivity propellants and insensitive munition explosives. Researchers have conducted preliminary evaluations on the combustion characteristics and energy performance of multicomponent propellants containing FOX-12. FOX-12 was applied to the composite modified double base propellant formulation, and the process safety of the propellant was evaluated: the actual formula showed a good combustion performance, and the pressure exponent met the requirements of engineering application .…”

“…It has interesting properties as a high explosive and also finds application in the GUDN is an insensitive energetic ingredient for insensitive munitions, such as LOVA propellants for artillery modular charges, the main component in warhead fillings like general purpose bombs, artillery, tank and mortar ammunition. The use of powerful, safer and eco-friendly explosives is the main criteria of ammunitions during propellant formulations [36]. GUDN is a low vulnerability energetic material, to impact and friction stimuli and is a good candidate for IM [37].…”
