Thermal aging performance of glass fiber/polyphenylene sulfide composites in high temperature

Abstract: In order to use the glass fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide composites (GF/PPS) in high temperature environments, thermal aging performance of two kinds of commercial grade PPS composites, reinforced by 40% glass fiber, PPS‐G40 HM and 1140L4, in thermal aging temperature of 250°C was compared by tensile strength, oxidized layer, color, crystallization and melting behavior. The results showed that tensile strength of GF/PPS composites is significantly decreased with increasing of aging time below 200 h and… Show more

“…In the case of the PPS matrix reinforced by GF (PPS/GF), it is possible to verify the exact characteristics of change in the structure of the material as observed with CF reinforcement, mentioned above, as presented in the studies of Wang et al [85] . These authors give information on the crystallization and fusion behavior of PPS/GF.…”

“…15 Consequently, the mechanical properties of these composites can be significantly enhanced by incorporating LCP in PPS. 16,17 PPS materials with fiber modification, particularly GF reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (GF/PPS) composites, are regarded as highly successful. GF, recognized as a high-strength rigid filler, is commonly employed to reinforce polymer composites due to its lower cost and broader industrial applications compared to other reinforcing fibers.…”

“…6 As a feasible and cost-effective dust removal technology, bagfilter or electrostatic-bag composite precipitators with polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) have attracted numerous attentions from researchers and relative industrial engineers because of its high rejection rate, low resistance and easy cleanout. [7][8][9][10] A critical and limited parameter of precipitators is the lifetime, which is closely related to the operating cost of factories. Besides, the lifetime of PPS with high resistance to aggressive chemicals and high temperature is dominating in the durability of precipitators.…”

“…[20][21][22][23][24] Consequently, the reduced mechanical properties, shorter service life can be observed. Extensive researches 7,8,[25][26][27] have been conducted to illustrate the degradation mechanisms of PPS under the simulated environments. Tanthapanichakoon 28 examined the resistance of a PPS-based filter to several chemicals, concluding that HNO 3 caused severe degradation of the PPS filter while remaining highly resistant to HCl and H 2 SO 4 .…”
