Therapy of Bladder Carcinoma

Abstract: Two hundred and fourteen bladder carcinomas were evaluated retrospectively after reclassification of histological specimens according to UICC. Follow-up time was 7 years or longer. Large size but not multiplicity of the primary tumour indicated a poor prognosis. Local infiltration, even if superficial and restricted to the lamina propria, worsened prognosis as well as high grade of the tumour. Late deaths in the present series were generally explained by a progression in stage in patients with high grade tumou… Show more

“…Multiple tumors at diagnosis were seen in 23% of our patients, which is a lower incidence than the 29-30% in other studies (13,15). One possible explanation for the difference may be the inclusion of smaller, papillary low-grade tumors and solitary tumors in our population-based study from 1987-88.…”

“…Consequently, this report describes patient material reflecting the true incidence and distribution of bladder carcinomas in a geographical region. The mean age of the patients (70.5 years) is equal to or slightly higher than the mean age in previous Scandinavian reports (4,5,8,13). These reports mainly comprised unselected patients from the catchment areas of the respective centres.…”

“…Studies on the predictive significance of the initial grade have been based on the results of surgical management alone (Makinen et al, 1978;Collan et al, 1979;Hellsten et al, 1981;Pavone-Macaluso, 1982;Huland et al, 1984;Kurth et al, 1985). The prognostic importance of the grade can be re-examined in the light of adjuvant instillation prophylaxis.…”
