Therapeutic potential of a novel combination of Curcumin with Sulfamethoxazole against carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver injury in Swiss albino mice

Abstract: Background In the current study, we have investigated the effect of each of curcumin (CUR) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) either separate or mixed together (CUR + SMX) on biochemical, hematological and histological alternations associated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. Results CCl4, caused changes of several biomarkers, proving its hepatotoxic effects, such as an increase in aminotransferases liver enzymes alanine and … Show more

“…In a study, eugenol caused a decrease in the SGOT, SGPT, and ALP serum marker enzyme levels triggered by metanil yellow (My1) in albino Wistar rats (40). It was stated that combination of Curcumin with Sulfamethoxazole decreased the elevated levels of hepatic markers (AST and ALT) against carbon tetrachloride induced liver injury in Swiss albino mice (41). Also, the intoxication of rats with CCl 4 caused a substantial rise in TG, Chol, TB, and DB serum levels relative to the control group.…”

“…CCl 4 toxicity causes free radical reactions through enzymes of the CYP 450 system, producing hepatotoxic metabolites. These metabolites cause hepatotoxicity through induction of lipid peroxidation, that all together gives MDA and NO products that serve as an indicator of hepatic toxicity and failure of protective mechanisms to delay the free radical formation [ 43 ]. OTTE reduces the MDA and NO in the liver significantly as compared to the CCl 4 -treated group at post-treatment, thus the OTTE has a therapeutic efficacy.…”

“…Our results (Figure 3) showed that in response to carrageenan injection, the platelet number dropped down, whereas sericin and curcumin ameliorated the platelet count in a dose dependent manner. Previously, many researchers reported that sericin and curcumin can elevate the count of platelets in inflammatory conditions (Ma et al, 2021;Zahran et al, 2020). Zahran et al (2020) evaluated the therapeutic potential of curcumin alone and together with sulfamethoxazole in mice.…”

Zahran et al (2020) evaluated the therapeutic potential of curcumin alone and together with sulfamethoxazole in mice. They demonstrated that curcumin alone or in combination with sulfamethoxazole has potential to enhance platelet count.…”
