Therapeutic experience with cefdinir in the treatment of uSSSIs

Abstract: Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections (uSSSIs) are common community-acquired infections which are often caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, although other pathogens are often involved. A recent treatment algorithm has recommended the use of cephalosporins as an appropriate antibiotic therapy for uSSSIs and, in particular, highlighted cefdinir as an extended-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin with good antimicrobial activity and favourable tolerability. “…Cephalosporins, are the most widely used for treatment of skin infections because of their safety profiles 13 . Cephalexin monohydrate (CEM), (7R)-7-(D-α-Amino-α-phenylacetamido)-3-methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid hydrate or (6R,7R)-7-{[(2R)-2-amino-2-phenylacetyl]amino}-3-methyl-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid hydrate (Figure 1), is an antibiotic which has high oral absorption and lack of serum binding 14 .…”

“…Particularly, children and elderly people are mostly affected with skin infections due to lack of potent immune system. Cephalosporins, are most widely used for treatment of skin infections because of their safety profiles 1–3. Cephalexin, a first generation cephalosporin antibiotic is mostly used because of its activity against both the gram‐positive and gram‐negative microorganisms 4.…”
